I watched 3/4 of this movie with my mom last night and to be honest, i don't really like it. Mom was nagging me to watch it with her cause she feels like my knowledge regarding the 'outside world' and history is ignorant, i mean I'm not protesting or anything but i honestly have no interest in political views and such. Unless you have interest in those foreign language+english subs movies, I'm not recommending~
Basically, the point of this movie was to tell the whole world the untold story of the courageous spirit coming from a frail, thin and petite woman who sacrificed her own personal happiness for the freedom of her people in Burma. Aan Suu Kyi (i think)
This might sound selfish but i honestly wouldn't do that in a million years and go though all those nightmares and pain she undergo just for the sake of the Burma-nians, which what made her inspiring and had her achieve the Peace Noble Prize 1991.
Before, if you had a red scarf tied around your neck, it gives you the right to kill and torture just anyone you want. There are scenes were these 'red scarf'-ed soldiers had heartlessly performed a massacre act on teenage students who were protesting at the roads for the unpopular laws introduced by the government. I had the shivers when these bloody, seriously injured, unconscious helpless people were shot and viciously beaten up without any hesitant. Seriously, one thing i will never understand is how and why people has the heart to act such terrible things like beating a bloody soul to its death and treating it like an animal. I can't imagine how i would feel if i were in their shoes, frantically trying to get away from the grasps of those armed red scarfed dude while all around me, people are being tackled, dragged, shot in the face and attacked, blood splattering everywhere.
You know, its highly possible for these kind of things to happen in Indonesia since we all know Indonesia doesn't really go to the 'top most civilized and advanced countries worldwide!'. Like that massive horrifying riot back in 1998, terrible period for us Indonesian chinese, seriously I'm soooo worried that would happen again in future. But even though this movie kind of bores me, it made me realize how lucky we were compared to them who were hungry for even a little freedom. And according to mom, Suu ended up being imprisoned in her own house for more than 20 years. Imagine 20 years of your life passing before you when in fact you could be back in the peaceful UK having the last moments with your cancer-affected husband and with your two growing up sons. Well, this lady deserves respect.
